When we think of Sarah Jessica Parker as we know her today, it’s hard not to seperate her from her glam, movie star persona or even her famous Sex and the City character Carrie Bradshaw, who had all the shoes (no matter what the cost). Sure SPJ can have whatever her heart desires now (and her wardrobe is pretty dope). But that hasn’t always been the case.

See, the actor didn’t grow up getting every single thing her heart desired, even though she started earning her own money as an 11 year-old stage actor. In this clip from Entertainment Weekly, she explains why not having it all is actually a good thing — so much so that she tries to create a similar experience for her own kids.

“I work hard to be as depriving to my children as my mother was,” Sarah Jessica Parker says in the clip. And she’s not talking about depriving her kids from basic human needs like affection, love, comfort or safety, she clarifies. “I like to withhold things from my children because I want them to yearn for things they want. And in some cases, as my son gets older, I think he should earn [those things], right? I think it’s good to pine for something, so that when you get it, it has such meaning, you aren’t casual about the possession.”

So next time you get a little jealous of your bestie or some girl on Instagram who has the new Gucci bag, that gorgeous Kat Von D eyeshadow palette or seemingly, every. little. thing that a human could possibly pine for, remember: yearning helps fuel our drive, which not only makes us stronger and more appreciative people, but more relentless empire builders. So keep that “want” list stocked — it may be the thing that helps you hustle that much harder.
