The warming, antioxidant-rich chai spices include cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, star anise, ginger, fennel, and black pepper. The black tea found in chai is beneficial in a body scrub formula, as the caffeine stimulates circulation, aids detoxification, and reduces the appearance of cellulite. In Ayurvedic traditions, chai spices are known to be calming, vitalizing, and mentally clarifying.Yields: 20 ounces

½ cup Chai Spice–Infused Oil (see Chapter 7)

¼ cup sweet almond oil, or favorite carrier oil

1⁄8 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1⁄8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1⁄8 teaspoon ground cardamom

1⁄8 teaspoon ground ginger (dried, not fresh)

½ cup raw unpasteurized honey

½ cup almond meal

¾ cup brown sugar

What you will need: medium-size mixing bowl, measuring cups, fork, jars and lids to fit 20 ounces of scrub

1. To Make: In a medium-size mixing bowl, mix oils, spices, and honey with a fork until well blended. Stir in almond meal, mixing until blended. Then stir in brown sugar until you have a consistent texture.

2. To Store: To preserve the freshness of this natural scrub, do not get water into the jar. Store this scrub in a sealed jar in a cool dark place, out of direct sunlight. Use up within a year.

3. To Use: Use in place of a soap or body wash in your shower or bath. Apply to your skin in small, upward, circular motions. Massage the scrub in small circular motions, starting with the legs and arms, making your way up to the torso, ending at your heart. Rinse well.

Helpful Hints You can substitute ½ teaspoon fresh grated ginger for the dried ginger, but this will reduce the shelf life to 2 weeks, stored in the fridge.

We’re just gonna come out and say it. Black Friday is for suckers (and so is Cyber Monday and the crazy days in between). Why fight rabid shoppers, miserable traffic conditions and fired-up protesters just to find a blahzay-blah, got-it-from-the-mall gift?  We think it’s so much cooler to make gifts for friends and fam–and turn the experience into a weekend-long party too.

Since frigid, dry weather calls for soothing baths and more hydrating skin care (sad fact: radiant heat, wind and cold weather all dry the dickens out of skin), we’re gearing up to make gifts that will help our friends handle both.

Never made skin care products before? Yeah–neither have we. Thankfully, Angel Face Botanicals Founder and 100 Organic Skin Care Recipes Author Jessica Ress has got our backs and is sharing her organic recipes for skin-smoothing bath products that are every bit as indulgent as the pricey blends found in spa retail shops–but without the ridic price tags.

Each day this weekend, we will post a recipe from Ress’s book of all-natural beauty potions to help you and your posse go from ashy to classy. Grab a few friends, some warm cider and a rainy-day playlist and craft your way to finished gifts-to-give list–all without having to leave home.
