CASSIE’S REMIXED NINETIES STYLE
There have been lots of big swings and terrible misses at ’90s style in pop culture as of late (see Katy Perry and Kate Bosworth, among others), but what these victims are missing when it comes to tapping into the era’s glitter-meets-grunge, layer-friendly style is that the freshest ’90s icon wasn’t from the ’90s at all–it was best captured a few years ago on TV in the UK. Were talking about Cassie from UK’s Skins, which first aired in 2007. If Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain, two of the most revered fashion icons of the era, were to have a fictional, style love child, then our Cassie would be it.
We don’t love her diseased frame so much (the character is anorexic), but the way in which she dressed it? Well, she perfectly nailed the look that modern-day ’90s revivalists are going for. But here’s the trick: she didn’t just borrow layered dressing, grandpa cardigans, mismatched patterns and white-framed sunglasses from Kurt; and wild, unkempt hair and messy makeup, socks-and-heels, and a touch of sparkle from Courtney. Cassie made the look her own–and isn’t this the definition of style–by mixing these elements with preppy blazers, zany, patterned skirts and more. The result? The best and most modern remix of ’90s cool that we could hope for.
Here, she serves as our muse as we dress to tip our hat to ’90s fashion, without trying to replicate the era, thread by thread.
